July 2008: Summer Fun!

July 2008: Summer Fun! While we hope that every issue of Pockets is fun for the children who read it, occasionally we do an issue where fun is at the top of the agenda. This issue celebrates the sheer joy of being alive and aims to help children understand that God wants us to delight in our lives.

Stories: In “Doesn’t That Stink?” Savannah dreads spending a week with her cousin Daisy, who constantly complains about everything. Savannah is determined to “make” Daisy have fun.

In “Starbird Ridge,” our continuing feature series, Sammy and her step-siblings are building a boat of milk jugs so they can compete in their town’s milk-jug derby.

In “Stupendous,” Abby looks forward to a day with her funny, unpredictable grandfather.

In “The Right Family,” Casey is upset that her family can’t take their usual summer vacation trip. They just can’t afford it this year. But an “at home” vacation proves to be more fun than she expected.

In “A.K.A. Little Miss Twinkle,” Sara isn’t looking forward to the week at her aunt and uncle’s farm. She would much rather be doing something more “fun.”

In “#1 Dog,” Jackson and his dog, Harvey, are invited to a birth-day party for a pampered poodle. Jackson’s mom thinks it’s a great idea, but Jackson and Harvey are less enthusiastic.

Pocketsful of Scripture includes readings from the Genesis, Esther, Luke, and Acts.

Pocketsful of Prayer focuses on joyful praise and worship.

Coming Up:

August 2008: Dealing with Fear and Worry: War, disease, terrorism, school bullies, natural disasters, random violence—the list of frightening possibilities goes on and on. This issue poses the question: how do we live with confidence as children of God in a frightening world? We want to acknowledge fear and worry as valid, while we help children move beyond those responses.

September 2008: The Golden Rule: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Those words seem so simple and obvious, but sometimes they are difficult to live by! It’s hard to be nice to a classmate who isn’t nice in return. It’s difficult to be patient with a little sister who annoys you. This issue is designed to help children understand what it means to live by the Golden Rule in their homes, their schools, their communities, and the world—in other words, in the everyday circumstances of their lives.
