What is a litany?

A litany is a responsive group prayer. In the prayer you can pray for something or someone or you can give thanks to God or celebrate a gift from God. Often litanies include a scripture to read first.

Usually one leader begins each set of statements (when you see "One" or "Leader" written) and the group responds together (when you see "All" or "Group" written). Sometimes, though, different members of the group take turns responding to the leader (when you see "One" then "Another" written).

Litanies are often part of formal church services, small group gatherings, or family worship. The litanies here are intended for family use. Remember that an adult doesn't necessarily have to be the leader. Giving children key roles such as serving as the leader or reading the scripture often increases their interest.

After each monthly litany is a prayer for your family to pray together and several activities to do. If you want, you can do each litany once a week for four weeks in a row and choose a different activity to do each week.
